RELATIONSHIP SKILLS

"Developing Friendships Through Play"

Research has shown that early intervention is critical for future success of children.  Social thinking and related social skills are very important in that success.  Relationships are built on mutually enjoyable, meaningful interactions.  Children need to know how to attend, participate in conversations, share, cooperate, and to take the perspectives of others in order to be successful academically and socially in school and beyond.  In early childhood, children learn these skills through play; therefore, it is extremely important that children learn joint attention, shared enjoyment, perspective taking, compromising, greetings, sharing, turn-taking and participation in conversations, along with other skills while in early childhood to prepare them for school.  Participating in symbolic and pretend play are precursors to understanding the perspectives of others, which is necessary in all parts of academic and social success.  This course provides instruction, demonstrations, modeling, practice, and promotion of transfer and generalization in all of these areas, thereby increasing skills and opportunities for positive social interactions for the participants.
